2010 was the greatest biggest bike ride

BikesThis year's Great Big Bike Ride was great and it was even bigger.

Almost 200 people took to their wheels yesterday to raise money for the Severn Hospice. We had a brand new 50km route this year which went down very well. Much of the 100km route was new as well because we had to put in last minute diversions to cope with a surprising number of road closures.

The event is an amazing partnership project bringing together The Bicycle Hub, Severn Hospice, Raynet Shropshire, Blists Hill museum, loads of volunteers and of course the people who do the cycling. We'd just like to say thank you to everyone who took part and everyone who helped out before hand and on the day.

It was a really great day, and we are expecting the riders to have raised loads of money for this vital local service. Don't take our word for it, read what the Hospice had to say. The High Sheriff wrote a piece, Johnny Sanders chipped in and there are oodles of photos up on flickr.

We will let you know how much the event raised once everyone has collected their sponsorship.

Ridgeback Horizon: get them while they still have them

Ridgeback World HorizonOne of our most popular bikes is the Ridgeback World Horizon. It's a light tourer with a lovely double-butted aluminium frame and carbon forks. It's set up like an Audax machine with mudguards, triple chainset and Sora transmission. It's great for going out for an enjoyable day in the hills or for a quick blast after work. In short it is ideal for the sort of riding that an awful lot of our customers enjoy.

Sadly, we've heard from Ridgeback that the Horizon is to be discontinued. The replacement will be fitted with a “Compact” chainset (more usually fitted to sportif bikes) which is not ideal for Shropshire hills. We've already thought about how we will tailor this bike for our customers (by fitting a wide ratio cassette since you ask) but the replacement will also cost a bit more.

So if you are wondering whether to invest in a light tourer, come to The Bicycle Hub and buy a Ridgeback World Horizon for £699 only while stocks last.

A great night's Crusading

The second Cambrian Crusade finished this morning with a lot of happy smiling faces.

There were some unexpected incidents en route including a collision with a car door (don't worry he's OK) on the Wharfage in Ironbridge. He did have to drop out but we used his wheel to keep another rider on the road. Then, towards the end of the event, someone lost their seatpost and finished the event on the back of a tandem. The original rider was pleased to give up his seat as he had reckoned without the discomfort that can come from too long on a mountain biking saddle.

Still 100miles on virtually traffic-free roads was awesome and as the sun came up we all really appreciated the scenery of mid Wales. It was a great ride.

Breakfast in Barmouth was ace, Boulton's coaches did us proud and everyone enjoyed the tea, coffee, bananas and cake along the route.

As you know the Cambrian Crusade is run to raise money for Severn Hospice if you'd like to make a donation click here.

And if you feel inspired to raise money for this excellent cause while cycling there is plenty of time to register for the Great Big Bike Ride which takes place on 5th September 2010.

Here are some photos. They were mostly taken at a checkpoint in a layby somewhere in the middle of nowhere. The photos get better as the sun started to break. So dark blurry cyclists=speedy cyclists (though it was not a race).

NHS employees save money on bicycles with us

We are delighted to announce that we can now offer bicycles through the NHS Cycle to Work Initiative. This is in addition to the CycleScheme, Cycle-Plus and Bike to Work Scheme which we already offered.

You may have heard of the tax-free cycle purchase scheme run by the government. In order to make use of the scheme your employer needs to sign up with a third-party provider. They do all the behind the scenes stuff and make it all happen. There are plenty of them, some of them restrict the shops that you can go to. The NHS Cycle to Work Initiative is, as the name suggests, used by a lot of NHS Trusts. We do charge an administration fee for bikes bought using the NHS Cycle to Work Initaitive (but only this scheme).

If your employer is signed up to any of the schemes that we work with, you can save huge amounts on a new bike. Click here to find out more or, even better, come to the Bicycle Hub and talk to us about it. We can also give you help and advice to increase cycling to your workplace.

June is bike month, all month, in Telford

Family rideWhile the rest of the UK celebrates cycling with a week-long jamboree of cycling fun and frolics, that's not enough for Telford and Wrekin cyclists. Telford has a bike month. That month is June and there is a full programme of events stretching from the first to the last days of the month.

The Bicycle Hub and Tandem Experience will be joining in of course with loads of excellent rides across the month but its not just us.

TBUG, Sustrans, Go-Ride and loads of others are organising fun events covering all sorts of cycling and aimed at all sorts of cyclists.

The full programme is available to download as a delightful looking PDF. There is a bit more information on the Telford Council web site.

We look forward to seeing you all our on your bikes.

But we think the highlight will be the Family Ride and Barbecue on the 12th of June in the evening. It's always an astonishingly popular event and it really is suitable for cyclists of every age and ability. More details on that shortly.

Outdoor First Aid Course, back by popular demand

Robin and LouIf you take part in outdoor activities, especially as a leader or organiser, our latest course should give you exactly what you need. We are running an Outdoor First Aid course on October 9th and 10th 2010, in the Tile Museum, Jackfield, nr Ironbridge, Shropshire.

This is the second time we have organised this course and the feedback from the first course in February was really positive. Book early to avoid disappointment.

The two day course will show you essential lifesaving techniques. You will learn how to deal with casualties safely, systematically and sympathetically in the first few minutes of a more remote incident. You will develop the skills so that with limited resources you can really improve the outcomes of an incident. Part of the course will take place outside so you can practise your First Aid and incident management skills in a realistic setting.

The course is organised by the Bicycle Hub and will be delivered by Robin Camps from Pura Vida First Aid Training. Robin is a Mountain Bike Leader, Bikeability Trainer and Mountain Leader. He has led expeditions in the UK, South America and Borneo.

Robin Robin explained

"The course is suitable for mountain bikers, canoeists, walkers and other people who take part in activities in remote areas. It would also benefit touring cyclists who ride around Shropshire's more remote lanes and byways. The course is HSE accredited and can be used to help gain a range of outdoor National Governing Body awards such as Mountain Leader, Walking Group Leader, Single Pitch Award, British Canoe Union, Scottish Mountain Bike Leader Award, Mountain-bike Instructor Award Scheme. It would still be of great benefit even if you are not working towards any other outdoor qualifications."

Peter Bird from the Bicycle Hub said

"Many of our customers are keen touring cyclists and mountain bikers who often ride into areas where ambulances could take a bit longer to reach them. Even on a social ride, accidents can happen and the skills that Robin will teach people could be the difference between a good and a bad outcome after an accident."

This is bound to be a very popular course so booking is essential. The cost will be £120 per person. Please call 01952 883249 or e-mail  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to make a booking or ask for further information.
